SUMMARY:HE NAMED ME MALALA - 4PM
DESCRIPTION:SCREENING: Friday\, February 5\, 4:00 pm\n \nDirected by: Davis Guggenheim\nDocumentary\, Rated PG for mature themes\, suspenseful situations\, non-graphic violence\, 88 min. (USA) \n  \nHe Named Me Malala is an intimate portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai\, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. The then 15-year-old was singled out\, along with her father\, for advocating for girls’ education\, and the attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. She miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls’ education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund. Acclaimed filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) shows us an inside glimpse into this extraordinary young girl’s life – from her close relationship with her father who inspired her love for education\, to her impassioned speeches at the UN\, to her everyday life with her parents and brothers. \n  \nSponsored by: \n \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtROMdwltJE” video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ]

SUMMARY:AL PURDY WAS HERE - 7PM
DESCRIPTION:SCREENING: Friday\, February 5\, 7:00 pm\n \nDirected by: Brian D. Johnson\nWith: Margaret Atwood\, Joseph Boyden\, Leonard Cohen\, Sarah Harmer\, Eurithe Purdy\nDocumentary\, Rated PG\, 92 min. (Canada) \n  \nTwo-time Governor General’s Award-winner Al Purdy was a charismatic tower of contradictions: a “sensitive man” who whipped out a poem in a bar fight; a factory worker who found grace in an Arctic flower; a mentor to young writers who remained a stranger to his sons. Purdy was famous for his diverse and stirring poetry\, boisterous and rabble-rousing personality and A-frame house in Roblin Lake\, Ontario\, which became a mecca for pioneers of Canadian literature including: Margaret Atwood\, Michael Ondaatje and Dennis Lee. Director Brian D. Johnson blends archival footage with readings\, reminiscences and live performances from those who have been touched by Purdy’s life – including Leonard Cohen\, Bruce Cockburn\, Gordon Pinsent and Tanya Tagaq – to create a complex and moving portrait of the “last\, best and most Canadian poet.” \n\n  \nGuest speaker for post screening Q&A: \n \nDr. Bruce Meyer \nThe Barrie Film Festival is pleased to welcome local Canadian poet and educator Bruce Meyer to speak at this screening and share with the audience his personal memories of Al Purdy as well discuss Purdy’s influence on Canadian culture. Dr. Bruce Meyer is the author of over 40 books of poetry\, short fiction\, non-fiction\, pedagogy and literary journalism and was the inaugural Poet Laureate of the City of Barrie. \nPhoto by Mark Raynes Roberts \n  \nSponsored by: \n \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7S7hLk1EQbE” video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ]
