SUMMARY:BEANS - Galaxy Cinemas
DESCRIPTION:In-person only: Thursday\, September 30\, 2021\nGalaxy Cinemas Barrie\, 72 Commerce Park Dr\, Barrie\, ON L4N 8W8\nDirected by Tracey Deer\nDrama\, Rated 14A – coarse language; violence\, 92 minutes\, Canada\, 2020\nStarring: Kiawentiio\, Rainbow Dickerson\, Violah Beauvais\, Paulina Alexis\, D’Pharaoh McKay Woon-A-Tai \n  \nReserved seating. Tickets $10.00 \n***THIS SCREENING HAS SOLD OUT***\n[maxbutton id=”8″ ] \n  \nBEANS is the coming-of-age story of a Mohawk girl named Tekehentahkhwa\, who more often goes by her quirky nickname\, Beans (Kiawentiio). She’s a loving big sister to her constant sidekick\, Ruby (Violah Beauvais)\, as they play in the woods and carefully avoid the rough and tough kids of their neighbourhood on the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawà:ke\, Quebec. \nHer father\, Kania’tariio (Joel Montgrand)\, rides her hard because he worries her sensitivity is a dangerous weakness. But her mother\, Lily (Rainbow Dickerson)\, has great aspirations for her and is an even bigger force to be reckoned with. They don’t agree on whether she should leave the reserve for high school\, and Beans isn’t brave enough to speak up for what she wants. \nThis debate is pushed to the side when a peaceful protest at a neighbouring reserve turns into an armed stand-off to protect a burial ground from being desecrated for a golf course expansion. Beans’ community quickly joins the battle in what becomes known as the Oka Crisis. Overnight\, her community is cut off from the outside world. \nBeans seeks out the toughest girl she knows\, April (Paulina Alexis)\, to transform into the brave Mohawk warrior that she needs to be to survive. She gains acceptance with the cool clique\, but that doesn’t prepare her for the racism and violence she confronts as the conflict escalates. Unable to cope\, she descends into a dark\, rage-filled existence focused on revenge. \nIt’s not until her reckless actions put everyone she cares about into peril that she wakes up to what’s really important in her fragile world. \n  \nAwards: 12 wins and 8 nominations \nWinner – Rising Stars Award\, Toronto International Film Festival\, 2020\nWinner – Best Canadian Feature Film\, Vancouver International Film Festival\, 2020\nWinner – DGC Discovery Award\, Directors Guild of Canada\, 2020\nWinner – WGC Award\, Feature Film\, Writers Guild of Canada\, 2021\nWinner – Best Feature\, Kingston Canadian Film Festival\, 2021\nWinner\, Canadian Screen Award\, Best First Feature Film\, Canadian Screen Awards\, 2021\nWinner – Audience Award\, Best Narrative Feature\, Blackstar Film Festival\, 2021\nWinner – Crystal Bear\, Best Film\, Berlin International Film Festival\, 2021 \n  \n\nGalaxy Cinemas COVID-19 Protocols:\nAs of September 22\, 2021\, the Government of Ontario requires guests who are 12 years of age and older to be fully vaccinated (two doses\, plus 14 days) and to provide their proof of vaccination along with photo ID to access our theatres.
