SUMMARY:Skate Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:[col_one ] \n \nSkate Kitchen\nWritten and Directed by: Crystal Moselle\nCast: Rachelle Vinberg\, Nina Moran\, Dede Lovelace\, Kabrina Adams and Jaden Smith\nDrama | 100 min. | 14A for coarse language\, sexual content\, and substance abuse | Not suggested for sensitive or young viewers | USA \n  \nSCREENING:\nSaturday\, October 13 – 1:30 pm\n \nClick here to buy tickets! \n  \n“Moselle believes in the power of girls. The friendships through which Camille learns how to be loved become the anguish that breaks her heart and the forgiveness that humbly heals her.” – Carly Lewis\, GLOBE AND MAIL \n“A touching ode to the rewards and challenges of female friendship…” – Justin Chang\, LOS ANGELES TIMES \n  \nCamille\, an introverted teenage skateboarder (newcomer\, Rachelle Vinberg) from Long Island\, meets and befriends an all-girl\, New York City-based skateboarding crew called Skate Kitchen. She falls in with the in-crowd\, has a falling-out with her mother\, and falls for a mysterious skateboarder guy (Jaden Smith)\, but a relationship with him proves to be trickier to navigate than a kick flip. Writer/director Crystal Moselle immersed herself in the lives of the skater girls and worked closely with them\, resulting in the film’s authenticity\, which combines poetic\, atmospheric filmmaking and hypnotic skating sequences. Skate Kitchen precisely captures the experience of women in male-dominated spaces and tells a story of a girl who learns the importance of camaraderie and self-discovery. \n  \n1 WIN\, 4 NOMINATIONS: \nWon – Grand Jury Award/Honourable Mention\, Outstanding U.S. Narrative Feature\, L.A. SUMMARY:This Mountain Life
DESCRIPTION:[col_one ] \n\nDirected by: Grant Baldwin\nWritten by: Grant Baldwin and Jenny Rustemeyer\nAdventure/Documentary | PG | 80 min. | Canada/USA \n  \nSCREENING:\nFriday\, October 12 – 7:00 pm  [Festival Opener]\nSunday\, October 21 – 3:30 pm \n  \n[btnsx id=”4880″] \n  \n“Breathtaking cinematography and brilliant aerial imagery.” – Alexander Rogalski\, Hot Docs 2018 \n  \nThe awe evoked by mountainous landscapes is universal\, yet few people ever venture into genuine wilderness. Living amongst us is a special breed of people\, undefined by age\, gender\, profession or background: for them\, the draw of the mountains is all-consuming. After months of preparation\, Martina and her 60 year-old mother Tania embark on a 6 month\, 2300 km journey which takes them from Squamish\, BC to Alaska\, through a relentless alpine wilderness. There are others who share a passion for the mountain life: a group of nuns inhabiting a cloistered retreat to be closer to God; a risk-taking photographer; an impassioned climber; a focused snow artist; a couple who has been living off grid for nearly 50 years: what is it that leads these adventurous people to sacrifice everything – comfort\, family\, personal safety – for such an existence? Shot in cinematic detail\, This Mountain Life attempts to answer the question and offers a riveting portrait of idealistic passion set high in the stunningly beautiful peaks of British Columbia. \n  \n \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qiw-c4K05F0″ video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n[/col_one]

SUMMARY:Boom for Real - 7PM
DESCRIPTION:  \n[col_one ] \n \nBoom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat\nFriday\, September 28\, 2018 – 7:00 pm\nUptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop St. W.\, Barrie\nTickets: Adults $10\, Senior/Students $8 \n  \nDirected by: Sara Driver\nWith: Alexis Adler\, Luc Sante\, Fred Brathwaite aka Fab 5 Freddy\, Lee Quiñones\, Jim Jarmusch\nDocumentary\, 14A for coarse language\, 78 minutes (USA) \n  \n[btnsx id=”4680″] \n  \n“What’s admirable about the film is how Driver gives the cross-pollinating forces of music\, media\, fashion and art such concise\, firsthand exploration.” – Nathalie Atkinson\, Globe and Mail \n  \n“What’s refreshing about Sara Driver’s look-back documentary…is the frisky\, contemplative\, ground-level angle it takes on its hype-magnet of a subject.” – Robert Abele\, Los Angeles Times \n  \nA look at Jean-Michel Basquiat’s life pre-fame\, and how New York City\, the times\, the people and the movements around him formed the artist he became. Boom For Real weaves the story of Jean-Michel and the city with never before seen works\, writings and photographs. Director Sara Driver worked closely and collaboratively with her friends and other artists who emerged from that scene: Nan Goldin\, Jim Jarmusch\, James Nares\, Fab Five Freddy\, Lee Quinones\, Luc Sante and many others. As they participated in the film with their thoughts\, period film footage\, music\, images\, and anecdotes of their young friend\, they helped visually tell the story of Jean-Michel’s downtown NYC – pre Aids\, President Reagan\, the real estate and art boom\, and before anyone was motivated by money and ambition. The definition of fame\, success and power were very different than today – to be a penniless but published poet was the height of success\, until everything changed in the early 1980’s. This is New York City’s story before that change. \n  \nNominated – Best Documentary and Direction\, Cleveland International Film Festival\, 2018 \n  \nShown in partnership with the MacLaren Art Centre\, Carnegie Days 2018. \n \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”vimeo” video_url=”https://vimeo.com/265396693″ video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n[/col_one]

The pair are two outsiders constrained by polite society but bound together by a natural chemistry and progressive ideas that are beyond the boundaries of their age and time. Mary and Percy declare their love for each other and much to her family’s horror they run away together\, joined by Mary’s half-sister Claire. In the midst of growing tension within their relationship and during their stay at Lord Byron’s house at Lake Geneva\, the idea of Frankenstein is conceived when a challenge is put to all house-guests to write a ghost story.
