SUMMARY:UPDATED - Paddling Film Festival World Tour 2022
DESCRIPTION:Lawn Chair Luminata | Outdoor screening \n \nNEW DATE\, DUE TO WEATHER – Thursday\, July 21\, 2022\nMeridian Place\, Downtown Barrie\nAdmission: Free\nStarts at dusk\, weather permitting\nAdventure\, 2022\, PG – some films are unrated\, 91 min. \nHosted by: \n \n  \nThe Paddling Film Festival is an international adventure film tour presenting the world’s best paddling films of the year – whitewater\, sea kayaking\, canoeing\, SUP\, action and lifestyle – in more than 120 cities and towns across Canada\, United States and around the world. \nHere is the line up: \n\nLEAN AGAINST THE WIND\nConquering the Mount Everest of canoe racing—a 45-mile stretch of stacked waves\, crashing currents and blistering winds off the coast of Hawaii—is just one way 12-time Molokai OC-1 World Champion and outrigger canoeist Lauren Spalding has distinguished herself. Add Olympian and working parent to the list\, and it’s safe to say she’s fully inherited her father’s legendary\, push-the-limits fervor.\nDirector: Keith Malloy\nProducer: Brett Williams (11:51) \n\nCONNECTED TO WATER: STEFI VAN WIJK\nThough paddling is in Stefi Van Wijk’s blood\, she had to find her own connection to the water. This Connected To Water episode features her story growing up in a family of championship paddlers\, finding her place at the Madawaska Kanu Centre\, and also what the Madawaska River has taught her after years of paddling.\nDirector: Ben Hemmings\nProducers: Julie Mulligan & Joseph Coppolino (3:56) \n\nDORY LAND\nFor whitewater dory lovers\, there’s no better place than Idaho. The state’s miles of wild\, free-flowing rivers are home to the country’s deepest gorges and some of the best big water rapids. In 1972\, renowned conservationist and Grand Canyon Dories founder Martin Litton asked Curt Chang if he’d like to take some boats and a crew to Hells Canyon. After an initial scouting trip\, Curt started up the Idaho operation. Since then\, Curt has fostered a community of guides who care deeply about rivers\, running good trips and the legacy of dories.\nDirector: Logan Bockrath (22:17) \n\nA QUALITY OF IMAGINATION\nIn a culture seemingly full of adrenaline junkies and going bigger\, Benny Marr contemplates the ultimate form of self-expression\, and the subtle moments defining one’s style.\nDirector: Caleb Roberts (5:28) \n\nFLUID TRAILS\nFluid Trails follows three adventurers as they make their way across Kahurangi National Park in New Zealand via mountain bike and packraft. The park is an ancient place with rare birds\, rolling alpine tussock\, earthquake shattered peaks and towering podocarp forests. A place of colonialism\, gold fever and exertion. A place of cascading rivers and winding singletrack.\nDirector: Deane Parker\nProducers: Deane Parker\, Dylan Gerwschitz (12:08) \n\nMY DEAR FEAR\nWhether sea kayaking in the surf\, climbing a giant rock wall or hiking alone in the woods\, most outdoor enthusiasts have had a run-in with fear. Sometimes fear offers a rush of adrenaline that pushes us towards our limits and beyond. Sometimes it takes control and we’re left paralyzed. When is fear valuable? What amount is too much? And how can paddlers distinguish the thin line between the two? My Dear Fear is the filmmaker’s creative approach to engage with these questions.\nDirector & Producer: Tom Vetterl (5:42) \n\nANIAKCHAK\nNewlyweds Graham Zimmerman and Shannon McDowell are professional athletes in different sports and find joy and common ground in a new\, fledgling activity: packrafting. This shared pursuit takes them on a harrowing adventure to Alaska’s Aniakchak National Monument\, the most remote and least visited part of America’s national park system.\nDirectors: Forest Woodward\, Graham Zimmerman\nProducers: Jim Aikman\, Graham Zimmerman (25:04) \n\n  \nPresented in partnership with the Downtown Barrie Business Association \n \n  \nSupported by:

From the moment the painting is bought for $1175 at a shady New Orleans auction house\, and the restorer discovers masterful Renaissance brushstrokes under the heavy varnish of its cheap restoration\, the Salvator Mundi’s fate is determined by an insatiable quest for fame\, money and power. SUMMARY:WHO WE ARE - Galaxy Cinemas

He went to Marquette University and Harvard Law School and has been a trial lawyer for over 40 years. In 2011\, Robinson began raising his then 13-year-old nephew and\, as a Black man raising a Black son\, struggled with what to tell his son about racism in America. How\, he wondered\, did we get here? And when he started looking at American history\, Robinson was shocked by what he had not known. For the past 10 years\, in community centres\, concert halls\, houses of worship\, and conference rooms across America\, he has been sharing what he learned. In WHO WE ARE — A CHRONICLE OF RACISM IN AMERICA\, Robinson faces his largest audience\, asking all of us to examine who we are\, where we come from\, and who we want to be. Anchored by Robinson’s 2018 performance at NYC’s historic Town Hall Theatre\, the film interweaves historical and present-day archival footage\, Robinson’s personal story\, and observational and interview footage capturing Robinson’s meetings with Black change-makers and eyewitnesses to history. From a hanging tree in Charleston\, South Carolina\, to a walking tour of the origins of slavery in colonial New York\, to the site of a 1947 lynching in rural Alabama\, the film brings history to life\, exploring the enduring legacy of white supremacy and our collective responsibility to overcome it. \n  \nAwards: 5 wins\, 8 nominations\nNominated – Best Documentary\, AARP Movies for Grownups Awards\, 2022\nWinner – AAFCA Award\, Best Independent Film\, African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA)\, 2022\nNominated – Best Documentary\, Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival\, 2021\nWinner – Bridging the Borders Award\, Special Mention\, Palm Springs International Film Festival\, 2022\nWinner – Golden Space Needle Award\, Best Documentary\, Seattle International Film Festival\, 2021\nWinner – Audience Award\, Documentary Spotlight\, SXSW Film Festival\, 2021\nNominated – New Directors Competition\, Best Film\, São Paulo International Film Festival\, 2021\nWinner – Films for Change Award\, Woodstock Film Festival\, 2021 \n  \nFunded by: City of Barrie\, Ontario Trillium Foundation and Telefilm Canada \nSponsored by: Busch Systems\, Digital Giants\, Lehman & Associates\, Netgain\, Plumbtech Plumbing Inc.\, Sigma Engagement Systems\, and Venable Park Investment Council Inc. \n

Hanging out the open door of an airplane\, he flew above unmapped mountain ranges – capturing iconic images with which he could make maps\, pursue scientific inquiries\, discover first ascents\, and inspire people. More than eighty years after Washburn first photographed Denali from the air\, climbing buddies Renan Ozturk (MERU) and Freddie Wilkinson look at some of Washburn’s images and have this crazy idea: rather than go up\, their dream is to go sideways — across the range’s most forbidding peaks\, the Mooses Tooth massif. It’s a decidedly new way to explore the same landscape Washburn first discovered. As they pioneer the route over the course of two expeditions\, enduring freezing bivies\, cut ropes\, and rock fall along the way\, their desire to be the first to complete the audacious line grows into an obsession. While the climbing action unfolds\, Washburn’s own incredible story comes to life through stunning archival footage and recreations. Filmed over a period of five years\, THE SANCTITY OF SPACE brings together visual elements of the highest order – from Washburn and Adams’s stunning large format black and white photographs to state-of-the-art helicopter cinematography to space photography – with an unforgettable story spanning generations. It’s both a white-knuckle adventure tale\, and a celebration of the spirit of exploration. \n  \nFunded by: City of Barrie\, Ontario Trillium Foundation and Telefilm Canada \nSponsored by: Busch Systems\, Digital Giants\, Lehman & Associates\, Netgain\, Plumbtech Plumbing Inc.\, Sigma Engagement Systems\, and Venable Park Investment Council Inc.

DESCRIPTION:Screening: Thu\, Mar 24 – 9:15 PM;\nand also Fri\, Mar 25 – 7:00 PM\nGalaxy Cinemas Barrie\, 72 Commerce Park Dr\, Barrie\, ON L4N 8W8\nTickets are $8 Senior/Student and $10 Adult\, plus service fees. \n[maxbutton id=”23″ ] \n  \nDirected by: Renan Ozturk and Freddie Wilkinson\nFeaturing: Renan Ozturk\, Freddie Wilkinson\, Zach Smith\nDocumentary/Adventure\, Not Rated – coarse language\, intense scenes\, 102 min.\, (USA) \n  \nCLICK HERE to view the trailer\n \n  \n“In the face of global climate change\, these images of the glacial otherworldliness of Alaska carry a wistful splendour and a bittersweet urgency.” – Craig Fedirighi\, vervetimes.com \n  \nBrad Washburn was the greatest aerial mountain photographer of all time.

SUMMARY:The Museum of Fiction - POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:THE MUSEUM OF FICTION  I. EMPIRE\n\nThe much-anticipated premiere of “The Museum of Fiction”\, created by acclaimed Argentine artist Matías Umpierrez and starring Robert Lepage\, has been postponed. For both technical and practical reasons\, the unique video installation experience will premiere in the spring of 2022.\nTalk Is Free Theatre and the Barrie Film Festival are dedicated to offering the highest quality of experience to audiences that in this specific case requires postponement. Details including new dates and the location of “The Museum of Fiction” will be announced January 2022.\nA representative from Talk Is Free Theatre will be contacting all ticket holders.\n\n  \nTalk Is Free Theatre and Barrie Film Festival are teaming up to co-present the Canadian premiere of The Museum of Fiction\, created by acclaimed Argentine artist Matías Umpierrez\, starring Ángela Molina and renowned Canadian actor/director Robert Lepage. \nThis innovative adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth unites the performing arts\, visual arts and cinema into a video installation experience that is unique to every audience member. In his work\, Umpierrez explores links between the spectator and fiction that have a resounding connection to the world today. The audience will be immersed in a fictional story by viewing a series of screens and\, depending which screen is being watched\, they have a fundamental role: to make their own editing and to create their own dramatic composition based on what they watch or omit. Exploring the contradictory concept of presenting fiction within the setting of a museum\, Umpierrez has created an experience that inspires conversations about how the truth relies on how individuals experience it in the moment. \nSet in 1990’s post-dictatorship Spain\, The Museum of Fiction immerses the audience in a world where propaganda is used to control the masses through the spread of false realities and fear. \nPresented in Spanish and French with English subtitles. \nContent advisory: some violence and intense scenes.
