SUMMARY:The Dressmaker - 7PM
DESCRIPTION:[col_one_third ] \n[col_one_third ] \n \n[/col_one_third] \n[col_two_thirds ] \nThe Dressmaker\nScreening:\nWednesday\, October 5\, 2016 – 7:00 pm\nLocation: Uptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop Street West\, Barrie \nDirected by: Jocelyn Moorhouse\nPrinciple Cast: Kate Winslet\, Liam Hemsworth\, Judy Davis\, Hugo Weaving\, Sarah Snook\nDrama\, 14A\, 118 min. (Australia) \n  \n“Moorhouse’s adaptation of Rosalie Ham’s 2000 novel may lead audiences to expect a primmer\, more well-behaved movie based on its title alone\, but that doesn’t mean it won’t have them in stitches.” – Justin Chang\, Variety \n[/col_two_thirds] \n[col_one ] \nThis wickedly comic drama stars Kate Winslet as a worldly dressmaker returning to the Australian backwater that exiled her. This latest feature from writer-director Jocelyn Moorhouse after an almost 20-year hiatus\, The Dressmaker is a sumptuous\, saucy\, and scandalous tale of love and vengeance in the mid-1950s. It also has the most fabulous gowns this side of the red carpet. Tilly Dunnage (Winslet) arrives in the small town of Dungatar like a gunslinger: broad-brimmed hat on her head\, sleek pumps on her feet\, trusty Singer sewing machine at her side. Driven away when she was just 10 years old\, the resilient Tilly found her way to Paris\, where she trained under legendary designer Madeleine Vionnet. She has come back to look after her ailing mother\, Molly (Judy Davis). When Tilly is hired to design and custom-make haute couture for the more rebellious local ladies\, a battle line is drawn: on one side\, those who love Tilly’s progressive style\, and on the other side\, Dungatar’s conservative busybody contingent. As tension between these camps escalates and her shadowy past becomes her enemies’ most potent weapon — but this fearsome fashionista has resolved to never let Dungatar get the best of her again. Winslet exudes femme-fatale danger and sexiness a — she’s Clint Eastwood meets Rita Hayworth. And Moorhouse\, working with co-writer P.J. Hogan in adapting Rosalie Ham’s novel\, infuses The Dressmaker with a perfect blend of glamour and edginess\, generating laughter and intrigue right up to the explosive finale. \nAwards: \nNominated\, Best Direction in a Feature Film\, Australian Directors Guild Awards\, 2016\nWon\, Best Actress (Winslet)\, Best Actor in Supporting Role (Weaving)\, Best Actress Supporting Role (Davis)\, Best Screenplay\, Australian Film Critics Assoc. From the early ’90s on\, Frank has been making his films and videos with the brilliant editor Laura Israel\, who has helped him to keep things homemade and preserve the illuminating spark of first contact between camera and people/places. Don’t Blink is Israel’s like-minded portrait of her friend and collaborator\, a lively mix of images and sounds and recollected passages and unfathomable losses and friendships that leaves us a fast and fleeting imprint of the life of the Swiss-born man who reinvented himself the American way\, and is still standing on ground of his own making at the age of 91. He revolutionized photography and independent film\, documenting the Beats\, Welsh coal miners\, Peruvian Indians\, The Stones\, London bankers\, and the Americans. This film is a bumpy ride\, revealed with unblinking honesty by the reclusive artist himself. \n\nShown in partnership with: \n \n[embed_video video_site=”vimeo” video_url=”https://vimeo.com/168531103″ video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n[/col_two_thirds] \n[/fullwidth]

SUMMARY:Love & Friendship - 7PM
DESCRIPTION:Love & Friendship\nScreening: Thursday\, September 8\, 2016 – 7:00 pm\nLocation: Uptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop Street West\, Barrie \nAdapted and Directed by: Whit Stillman\nPrinciple Cast: Kate Beckinsale\, Chloe Sevigny\, Xavier Samuel\nComedy/Drama\, PG for some thematic elements\, 92 minutes (Ireland / Netherlands / France / USA) \n  \n“Love & Friendship is quick\, clever and delightful\, very funny and hugely entertaining!” – Liz Braun\, Toronto Sun \n“With his love of fine clothes and finer diction\, Whit Stillman proves an unsurprisingly intuitive fit for Austen\, but he also knows just how to give her pointed social satire an extra stab of wink-wink postmodern drollery without breaking the spell.” – Justin Chang\, Variety \n  \n[col_one ] \nWriter-director Whit Stillman departs from the milieu of the contemporary New York upper crust that he so memorably explored in his earlier films for this sharp-tongued and riotously funny examination of 18th-century polite society. Adapting Jane Austen’s long-unpublished epistolary novella Lady Susan\, Stillman creates a period piece whose spirit is unmistakably modern. Love & Friendship revolves around the beautiful and cunning Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale)\, a recent widow who engineers all manner of wonderfully devious plots to bend the world to her will and land herself a wealthy new husband. Taking up residence at Churchill\, her in-laws’ estate\, she sets her sights on the dashing Reginald De Courcy (Xavier Samuel)\, and soon has him wrapped around her little finger. However\, her plans are derailed when her beautiful daughter Frederica (Morfydd Clark) turns up at Churchill after being dismissed from boarding school. Fearing that Frederica will turn Reginald’s head\, Lady Susan sets out to obtain her daughter a suitor of her own. Enter Sir James Martin (Tom Bennett)\, a well-meaning but witless older man who is utterly confounded by the fact that there is neither a church nor a hill at Churchill. Brilliantly played by Beckinsale\, Lady Susan possesses a confidence\, audacity\, and unapologetic dishonesty (“Facts are horrid things\,” she laments after being caught in a lie) that paradoxically endow her with a winning charm\, and make her an Austen her- oine to rival Elizabeth Bennett and Emma Woodhouse. If you’re looking for a smart\, fun\, and scruple-free romp\, Love & Friendship is definitely your cup of tea. \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjOb2BTmOzQ” video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n\nSponsored By:

SUMMARY:Love & Friendship - 4PM
DESCRIPTION:Love & Friendship\nScreening:\nWednesday\, September 7\, 2016 – 4:00 pm\nLocation: Uptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop Street West\, Barrie \nAdapted and Directed by: Whit Stillman\nPrinciple Cast: Kate Beckinsale\, Chloe Sevigny\, Xavier Samuel\nComedy/Drama\, PG for some thematic elements\, 92 minutes\n(Ireland / Netherlands / France / USA) \n“Love & Friendship is quick\, clever and delightful\, very funny and hugely entertaining!” – Liz Braun\, Toronto Sun \n“With his love of fine clothes and finer diction\, Whit Stillman proves an unsurprisingly intuitive fit for Austen\, but he also knows just how to give her pointed social satire an extra stab of wink-wink postmodern drollery without breaking the spell.” – Justin Chang\, Variety \n[col_one ] \nWriter-director Whit Stillman departs from the milieu of the contemporary New York upper crust that he so memorably explored in his earlier films for this sharp-tongued and riotously funny examination of 18th-century polite society. \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjOb2BTmOzQ” video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n  \n\nSponsored By:

DESCRIPTION:[col_one_third ] \n[col_one_third ] \n \n[/col_one_third] \n[col_two_thirds ] \nSunset Song\nScreening: Thursday\, July 7\, 2016 – 7pm\nLocation: Uptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop Street West\, Barrie \nWritten and Directed by: Terence Davies\nCast: Agyness Deyn\, Kevin Gutherie\, Ian Pirie and Peter Mullan\nDrama\, 14A for sexuality\, nudity and some violence\, not suggested for young or sensitive viewers\, 135 minutes (UK/Luxembourg) \n“Do not let this song go unheard.” – David Fear\, Rolling Stone \n“Visually stunning and emotionally engrossing.” – Deborah Young\, Hollywood Reporter \n“A lusty ballad of love and heartbreak sung with passion and power.” – Tom Huddleston\, Time Out \n[/col_two_thirds] \n[col_one ] \nSunset Song is Terence Davies’ intimate epic of hope\, tragedy and love at the dawning of the Great War. A young woman’s endurance against the hardships of rural Scottish life\, based on the novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon\, told with gritty poetic realism by Britain’s greatest living auteur. The film takes place during the early years of the twentieth century\, with the conflicts and choices a young woman experiences reflecting the struggle between tradition and change; a struggle that continues to resonate today. Set in a rural community\, Sunset Song is driven by the young heroine Chris and her intense passion for life\, for the unsettling Ewan and for the unforgiving land. The First World War reaches out from afar\, bringing the modern world to bear on the community in the harshest possible way\, yet in a final moment of grace\, Chris endures\, now a woman of remarkable strength who is able to draw from the ancient land in looking to the future. Sunset Song is at once epic in emotional scale and deeply romantic at its core\, given power by Terence Davies’ unflinching poetic realism. \nAwards:\n \nNominated\, Most Promising Newcomer\, Agyness Deyn\, British Independent Film Awards\, 2015\nWon\, Best Picture\, International Cinephile Society Awards\, 2016\nNominated\, Best Picture\, Official Competition\, London Film Festival\, 2015\nWon\, Best Non-U.S. Release\, Online Film Critics Society Awards\, 2015 \n \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Be0zgCk6a8″ video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n\nSponsored By:
