SUMMARY:Sing Street - 4PM
DESCRIPTION:Sing Street\n \nScreening: Thursday\, June 2\, 2016 – 4pm\nWritten and Directed by: John Carney\nCast: Jack Reynor\, Maria Doyle-Kennedy\, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo\, Lucy Boynton and Aidan Gillen \nDrama/Musical\, 14A thematic elements including strong language and some bullying behavior\, a suggestive image\, drug material and teen smoking\, 105 minutes (Ireland/UK/USA) \n  \n“Few films are ever as enjoyable and endearing as Sing Street. From its five-star cast to its unforgettable soundtrack\, Carney’s latest musical masterpiece dances around with a jovial charm that’s addicting and innocent enough to revisit again and again.” – Michael Roffman\, Consequence of Sound \nFrom director John Carney (Once\, Begin Again)\, SING STREET takes us back to 1980s Dublin seen through the eyes of a 14-year-old boy named Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo). He is looking for a break from a home strained by his parents’ relationship and money troubles\, while trying to adjust to his new inner-city public school where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious\, über-cool and beautiful Raphina (Lucy Boynton)\, and with the aim of winning her heart he invites her to star in his band’s music videos. There’s only one problem: he’s not part of a band… yet. She agrees\, and now Conor must deliver what he’s promised – calling himself “Cosmo” and immersing himself in the vibrant rock music trends of the decade\, he forms a band with a few lads\, and the group pours their hearts into writing lyrics and shooting videos. Inspired by writer/director John Carney’s life and love for music\, SING STREET shows us a world where music has the power to take us away from the turmoil of everyday life and transform us into something greater. \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfVskED-N0c” video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n  \nTickets: Adults $10\, Senior/Student $8 \nAdvance tickets are available one week before screening at Uptown Theatre box office (evenings) and the MacLaren Art Centre front desk (during gallery hours). Tickets will also be available on the day of screening at Uptown box office an hour before screening start time. Subject to availability.

SUMMARY:Lady in the Van - 7PM
DESCRIPTION:[col_one_third ] \n[col_one_third ] \n \n[/col_one_third] \n[col_two_thirds ] \nThe Lady in the Van\nScreening: Thursday\, April 7\, 2016 – 7pm\nLocation: Uptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop Street West\, Barrie \nDirected by:  Nicholas Hytner\nCast:  Maggie Smith\, Alex Jennings\, Jim Broadbent\, Frances De La Tour and Roger Allam\nComedy/Drama\, PG for mature theme\, coarse language\, crude content\, 104 min. (United Kingdom) \n“Maggie Smith couldn’t be more perfect for the title role in this film if it were written for her. But the most astounding thing about this story is that it’s true\, an event from playwright-screenwriter Alan Bennett’s own life.” – Rich Cline\, Contactmusic.com \n[/col_two_thirds] \n[col_one ] \nDirected by veteran Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys)\, The Lady in the Van is a playful\, inventive\, and relentlessly funny film that reminds us of the value of taking a chance on strangers — and of the long road that gradually turns strangers into friends. \nBased on Alan Bennett’s memoir and hit West End play\, this brilliantly witty\, “mostly true” story chronicles an unlikely friendship between a writer and an elderly eccentric. \nIn Bennett’s case\, opening his door (or at least his driveway) to Miss Mary Shepherd (Dame Maggie Smith\, My Old Lady\, Quartet)\, an ornery\, impolite\, and bullying homeless woman who claims to take advice from the Virgin Mary. Despite his private nature\, Bennett takes pity on the elderly woman and agrees to let her park her rundown van on his property for three months. It’s likely\, however\, that curiosity has as much to do with his decision as does charity. Where did Miss Shepherd find this van? Where did she learn French? And who is the strange man (Jim Broadbent) who keeps coming round in the middle of the night? While the questions are many\, Bennett has plenty of time to discover the answers to them\, as Miss Shepherd tests the limits of his hospitality by stretching the original three-month stay into 15 years. \nAwards:\nNominated\, Best Performance by Actress (Maggie Smith) in a Musical/Comedy\, Golden Globes\, 2016 \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZduY6lMcf8w” video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ]

SUMMARY:Anomalisa - 8PM
DESCRIPTION:[col_one_third] \n \n[/col_one_third] \n[col_two_thirds ] \nAnomalisa\nScreening: Thursday\, March 17\, 2016 – 8pm\nTickets: Adults $10\, Senior/Senior $8\nLocation: Uptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop Street West\, Barrie\nWritten by: Charlie Kauffman\nDirected by: Charlie Kauffman and Duke Johnson\nVoice talents: David Thewlis\, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Tom Noonan \nAnimated Comedy-Drama\, PLEASE NOTE: THIS FILM IS RATED “18A” for sexual content\, nudity\, and coarse language\, it is NOT appropriate for young or sensitive viewers. 90 minutes (USA) \n“Kaufman and Johnson’s film is a heart-stopping masterpiece of emotional malaise and disconnection\, vividly surreal and achingly real at the same time.”  – Daniel Barnes\, Sacramento News & Review \n[/col_two_thirds] \n[col_one ] \n \nMichael Stone (David Thewlis) is a successful motivational speaker with fans across the country\, but inside him sits a knot of anxiety that renders much of his daily life meaningless. Everything and everyone just seems the same to him. But then Michael meets Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) on a speaking-tour stop in Cincinnati. Lisa is an anomaly. Michael and Lisa begin with prickly\, cautious conversations and then move towards love. But\, unlike in a conventional Hollywood romance\, that romantic arc is neither simple nor obvious. The love scene at the heart of Anomalisa should instantly rocket up the list of cinema’s greatest. It’s intimate\, awkward\, heartbreaking\, and deeply erotic despite the fact that the lovers are made of felt. Returning to the themes of human connection and artistic creation that ran through his feature directorial debut\, Synecdoche\, New York\, as well as his screenplays for Being John Malkovich\, Adaptation\, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind\, Kaufman delivers an even more insightful rumination on love here\, one that finds its perfect expression in the fragility of the film team’s stop-motion figures. This is a beautiful\, one-of-a-kind romance. – Cameron Bailey\, TIFF 2015 \n  \nAwards: \nNominated\, Best Animated Feature Film of the Year\, Academy Awards\, 2016\nNominated Best Motion Picture-Animated\, Golden Globes 2016\nWon\, Best Dipiction of Nudity\, Sexuality or Seduction\, Alliance of Women Film Journalists\, 2016\nWon\, Best Animated Film\, Boston Society of Film Critics Awards\, 2015\nNominated\, Best Feature/Best Director/Best Screenplay/Best Supporting Female\, Independent Spirit Awards\, 2016\nWon\, Creative Impact in Direction Award (Charlie Kauffman) Palm Springs International Film Festival\, 2016\nWon\, Best Screenplay\, Vancouver Film Critics Circle\, 2016\nWon\, Future Film Festival Digital Award & Grand Special Jury Prize\, Venice Film Festival\, 2015 \n  \nSponsored by: \n \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQkHA3fHk_0″ video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ]

He’s a natural\, showing us Theeb’s curiosity\, loyalty and ingenuity while still retaining the innocence of a boy who has been sheltered from the world outside the desert.” – Bill Goodykoontz\, Arizona Republic \n  \nArabia\, 1916. Theeb (Theeb means wolf in Arabic) lives with his Bedouin tribe in a forgotten corner of the Ottoman Empire. Having recently lost his father\, it falls to Theeb’s brother\, Hussein\, to raise him. Hussein tries to teach Theeb the Bedouin way of life\, but the young boy is more interested in mischief than mentorship. Their lives are interrupted with the arrival of a British Army Officer and his Guide on a mysterious mission. Unable to refuse help to his guests for fear of dishonouring his late father’s reputation\, Hussein agrees to escort the pair to their destination\, a water-well on the old pilgrimage route to Mecca. Fearful of losing his brother\, Theeb chases after Hussein and embarks on a treacherous journey across the Arabian Desert.
