SUMMARY:SANCTITY OF SPACE - Galaxy Cinemas
DESCRIPTION:Screening: Thu\, Mar 24 – 9:15 PM;\nand also Fri\, Mar 25 – 7:00 PM\nGalaxy Cinemas Barrie\, 72 Commerce Park Dr\, Barrie\, ON L4N 8W8\nTickets are $8 Senior/Student and $10 Adult\, plus service fees. \n[maxbutton id=”23″ ] \n  \nDirected by: Renan Ozturk and Freddie Wilkinson\nFeaturing: Renan Ozturk\, Freddie Wilkinson\, Zach Smith\nDocumentary/Adventure\, Not Rated – coarse language\, intense scenes\, 102 min.\, (USA) \n  \nCLICK HERE to view the trailer\n \n  \n“In the face of global climate change\, these images of the glacial otherworldliness of Alaska carry a wistful splendour and a bittersweet urgency.” – Craig Fedirighi\, vervetimes.com \n  \nBrad Washburn was the greatest aerial mountain photographer of all time. Hanging out the open door of an airplane\, he flew above unmapped mountain ranges – capturing iconic images with which he could make maps\, pursue scientific inquiries\, discover first ascents\, and inspire people. More than eighty years after Washburn first photographed Denali from the air\, climbing buddies Renan Ozturk (MERU) and Freddie Wilkinson look at some of Washburn’s images and have this crazy idea: rather than go up\, their dream is to go sideways — across the range’s most forbidding peaks\, the Mooses Tooth massif. It’s a decidedly new way to explore the same landscape Washburn first discovered. As they pioneer the route over the course of two expeditions\, enduring freezing bivies\, cut ropes\, and rock fall along the way\, their desire to be the first to complete the audacious line grows into an obsession. While the climbing action unfolds\, Washburn’s own incredible story comes to life through stunning archival footage and recreations. Filmed over a period of five years\, THE SANCTITY OF SPACE brings together visual elements of the highest order – from Washburn and Adams’s stunning large format black and white photographs to state-of-the-art helicopter cinematography to space photography – with an unforgettable story spanning generations. It’s both a white-knuckle adventure tale\, and a celebration of the spirit of exploration. \n  \nFunded by: City of Barrie\, Ontario Trillium Foundation and Telefilm Canada \nSponsored by: Busch Systems\, Digital Giants\, Lehman & Associates\, Netgain\, Plumbtech Plumbing Inc.\, Sigma Engagement Systems\, and Venable Park Investment Council Inc.

SUMMARY:The Museum of Fiction - POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:THE MUSEUM OF FICTION  I. EMPIRE\n\nThe much-anticipated premiere of “The Museum of Fiction”\, created by acclaimed Argentine artist Matías Umpierrez and starring Robert Lepage\, has been postponed. For both technical and practical reasons\, the unique video installation experience will premiere in the spring of 2022.\nTalk Is Free Theatre and the Barrie Film Festival are dedicated to offering the highest quality of experience to audiences that in this specific case requires postponement. Details including new dates and the location of “The Museum of Fiction” will be announced January 2022.\nA representative from Talk Is Free Theatre will be contacting all ticket holders.\n\n  \nTalk Is Free Theatre and Barrie Film Festival are teaming up to co-present the Canadian premiere of The Museum of Fiction\, created by acclaimed Argentine artist Matías Umpierrez\, starring Ángela Molina and renowned Canadian actor/director Robert Lepage. \nThis innovative adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth unites the performing arts\, visual arts and cinema into a video installation experience that is unique to every audience member. In his work\, Umpierrez explores links between the spectator and fiction that have a resounding connection to the world today. The audience will be immersed in a fictional story by viewing a series of screens and\, depending which screen is being watched\, they have a fundamental role: to make their own editing and to create their own dramatic composition based on what they watch or omit. Exploring the contradictory concept of presenting fiction within the setting of a museum\, Umpierrez has created an experience that inspires conversations about how the truth relies on how individuals experience it in the moment. \nSet in 1990’s post-dictatorship Spain\, The Museum of Fiction immerses the audience in a world where propaganda is used to control the masses through the spread of false realities and fear. \nPresented in Spanish and French with English subtitles. \nContent advisory: some violence and intense scenes. Little did they know their garage band would evolve into the legendary rock group Fanny\, the first all-women band to release an LP with a major record label (Warner/Reprise\, 1970). Despite releasing 5 critically-acclaimed albums over 5 years\, touring with famed bands from SLADE to CHICAGO and amassing a dedicated fan base of music legends including David Bowie\, Fanny’s groundbreaking impact in music was written out of history… until bandmates reunite 50 years later with a new rock record deal. With incredible archival footage of the band’s rocking past intercut with its next chapter releasing a new LP today\, the film includes interviews with a large cadre of music icons\, including Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott\, Bonnie Raitt\, The Go-Go’s Kathy Valentine\, Todd Rundgren\, The Runaways’ Cherie Currie\, Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian\, The B52’s Kate Pierson\, Charles Neville and David Bowie guitarist and bassist Earl Slick and Gail Ann Dorsey. Fighting early barriers of race\, gender and sexuality in the music industry\, and now ageism\, the incredible women of Fanny are ready to claim their hallowed place in the halls of rock ‘n’ roll fame. \n  \nAwards: \nWinner – Rogers Audience Choice Award\, Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival\, 2021\nWinner – Audience Award\, Two Riversides Film and Art Festival\, 2021\nWinner – Frameline Completion Fund\, Frameline San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival\, 2020 \n

SUMMARY:BEANS - Galaxy Cinemas
DESCRIPTION:In-person only: Thursday\, September 30\, 2021\nGalaxy Cinemas Barrie\, 72 Commerce Park Dr\, Barrie\, ON L4N 8W8\nDirected by Tracey Deer\nDrama\, Rated 14A – coarse language; violence\, 92 minutes\, Canada\, 2020\nStarring: Kiawentiio\, Rainbow Dickerson\, Violah Beauvais\, Paulina Alexis\, D’Pharaoh McKay Woon-A-Tai \n  \nReserved seating. Tickets $10.00 \n***THIS SCREENING HAS SOLD OUT***\n[maxbutton id=”8″ ] \n  \nBEANS is the coming-of-age story of a Mohawk girl named Tekehentahkhwa\, who more often goes by her quirky nickname\, Beans (Kiawentiio). She’s a loving big sister to her constant sidekick\, Ruby (Violah Beauvais)\, as they play in the woods and carefully avoid the rough and tough kids of their neighbourhood on the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawà:ke\, Quebec. \nHer father\, Kania’tariio (Joel Montgrand)\, rides her hard because he worries her sensitivity is a dangerous weakness. But her mother\, Lily (Rainbow Dickerson)\, has great aspirations for her and is an even bigger force to be reckoned with. They don’t agree on whether she should leave the reserve for high school\, and Beans isn’t brave enough to speak up for what she wants. \nThis debate is pushed to the side when a peaceful protest at a neighbouring reserve turns into an armed stand-off to protect a burial ground from being desecrated for a golf course expansion. Beans’ community quickly joins the battle in what becomes known as the Oka Crisis. Overnight\, her community is cut off from the outside world. \nBeans seeks out the toughest girl she knows\, April (Paulina Alexis)\, to transform into the brave Mohawk warrior that she needs to be to survive. She gains acceptance with the cool clique\, but that doesn’t prepare her for the racism and violence she confronts as the conflict escalates. Unable to cope\, she descends into a dark\, rage-filled existence focused on revenge. \nIt’s not until her reckless actions put everyone she cares about into peril that she wakes up to what’s really important in her fragile world. \n  \nAwards: 12 wins and 8 nominations \nWinner – Rising Stars Award\, Toronto International Film Festival\, 2020\nWinner – Best Canadian Feature Film\, Vancouver International Film Festival\, 2020\nWinner – DGC Discovery Award\, Directors Guild of Canada\, 2020\nWinner – WGC Award\, Feature Film\, Writers Guild of Canada\, 2021\nWinner – Best Feature\, Kingston Canadian Film Festival\, 2021\nWinner\, Canadian Screen Award\, Best First Feature Film\, Canadian Screen Awards\, 2021\nWinner – Audience Award\, Best Narrative Feature\, Blackstar Film Festival\, 2021\nWinner – Crystal Bear\, Best Film\, Berlin International Film Festival\, 2021 \n  \n\nGalaxy Cinemas COVID-19 Protocols:\nAs of September 22\, 2021\, the Government of Ontario requires guests who are 12 years of age and older to be fully vaccinated (two doses\, plus 14 days) and to provide their proof of vaccination along with photo ID to access our theatres. Her younger cousin can’t figure out why she’d leave the French capital\, her aunt is overbearing\, and her uncle is only giving her a matter of weeks to crash in the apartment above their house. Selma\, nonetheless\, is steadfast in her resolve: to open up her own psychotherapy practice. There isn’t just the matter of finding interested patients in a locale that’s not keen on the talking cure. She also needs to navigate a confusing bureaucratic circus in order to get the right papers to run her practice. On top of all that\, a strapping — albeit unbending — cop\, Naim (Majd Mastoura)\, is keeping a close eye on her every move. Farahani gives a powerful and compelling performance. Meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family\, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate\, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo\, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist\, to the Parks. Soon\, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims’ newfound comfort\, a savage\, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out\, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks. By turns darkly hilarious and heart wrenching\, Parasite showcases a modern master at the top of his game. \n  \nAwards: 205 wins & 182 nominations!\n \nWinner\, Best Director/Best Original Screenplay/Best International Feature Film and Best Picture\, Academy Awards\, USA\, 2020\nWinner\, Best Foreign Film/Nominee – Best Director\, Golden Globes\, USA\, 2020\nWinner\, Best Screenplay\, BAFTA Awards\, 2020\nWinner\, Outstanding Performance by Cast in a Motion Picture\, Screen Actors Guild Awards\, 2020\nWinner\, Palme d’Or\, Cannes Film Festival\, 2019\nWinner\, Best Film\, Asia Pacific Screen Awards\, 2019\nWinner\, Best International Film\, British Independent Film Awards\, 2019 \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isOGD_7hNIY” video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n  \nFilm tickets: $10 for Adults\, $8 for Seniors/Students \nAdvance tickets are available online or at the Uptown Theatre the day of screening.
