SUMMARY:A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH... - 4PM
DESCRIPTION:A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence \nScreening: \nSaturday\, October 17\, 4:00 pm\, \nUptown Theatre\, Screen 4 \nWritten and Directed by Roy Andersson\nSweden/Germany/Norway/France / 2014 / Comedy/Drama / Rated PG for brief sexuality and some disturbing images / Swedish with English subtitles / 100 min. \n“The film’s tone may be one of unrelenting absurdist melancholy\, but Andersson does a dynamite job alchemizing despair into big\, albeit deadpan\, laughs\, and the ugliness and banality of everyday existence into moments of beauty…” – Nathan Rabin\, GLOBE AND MAIL \nMaster Swedish director Roy Andersson takes up the theme of “being a human being” with this meticulously crafted\, dreamlike black comedy. Featuring Sam and Jonathan\, a pair of hapless novelty salesmen\, we are taken on a kaleidoscopic tour of the human condition which unfolds in absurdist episodes: a sing-along at a 1940s beer hall\, a randy flamenco teacher\, a thirsty King Charles XII of Sweden en route to battle\, and a diabolical metaphor for the horrors inflicted by European colonialism. Ultimately\, it is a journey that unveils the beauty of single moments\, the pettiness of others\, life’s grandeur\, and the humour and tragedy hidden within us all. \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vg1wbGOgUSE” video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ]

DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are available two weeks before screening at the Uptown Theatre box office (in the evenings an hour before their first screening)\, the MacLaren Art Centre (during gallery hours)\, or at the door on the night of screening (subject to availability). HST is included in the ticket price. \n\nFor Carnegie Days Festival: \n \nBanksy Does New York\n \nScreening: Friday\, September 25\, 2015 – 7:00 pm\nLocation: Uptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop Street West\, Barrie\nTickets: $10\nDirector: Chris Moukarbel\nDocumentary\, PG\, 80 minutes (USA) \n  \nOn Oct. 1\, 2013\, the elusive British street artist known as Banksy launched a self-proclaimed month-long residency in New York City\, posting one unique exhibit a day in an unannounced location\, sparking a 31-day scavenger hunt both online and on the streets for Banksy’s work. \nCapturing this month of madness\, BANKSY DOES NEW YORK incorporates user-generated content\, from YouTube videos to Instagram photos\, from New Yorkers and Banksy hunters alike\, whose responses became part of the work itself\, for an exhilarating\, detailed account of the uproar created by the mysterious artist. \nWith installations spanning all five boroughs of New York City\, and including a mix of stencil graffiti\, sculpture\, video and performance art\, Banksy touched on such wide-ranging subjects as fast-food wages\, animal cruelty in the meat industry\, civilian casualties in Iraq and the hypocrisy of the modern art world. Daily News reporter Beth Stebner\, who covered Banksy’s residency\, was struck by the wide array of people drawn to his work\, noting\, “You had art students\, you had plumbers\, you had gallery owners. It just brought New Yorkers out.” \n  \nPresented in partnership with the MacLaren Art Centre. \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgctOrNS7T0″ video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n

SUMMARY:NFB Short Film Fest - 12PM
DESCRIPTION:Barrie International Comedy Festival presents: \nThe NFB Short Film Fest \nSeptember 19\, 2015 at 12:00pm\nPark Place Theatre at the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts\, 1 Dunlop St. W.\nTickets: Reserved seating $16.64\nFor ticket information click here.\nLunch available but not included in ticket price. \nThe BFF is partnering with Talk Is Free Theatre for a selection of the best comedic short films from the 75 Year history of the NFB. \nFilm Line-up: \n \nCanada Vignettes: Log Driver’s Waltz\nJohn Weldon\, 1979\, 3 min \nThis lighthearted\, animated short is based on the song “The Log Driver’s Waltz” by Wade Hemsworth. Easily one of the most often-requested films in the NFB collection\, Kate and Anna McGarrigle sing along to the tale of a young girl who loves to dance and chooses to marry a log driver over his more well-to-do competitor. Driving logs down the river has made the young man the best dancing partner to be found. \n\n \nGetting Started\nRichard Condie\, 1979\, 12 min 22 s \nThis hilarious short animated film stars a man who procrastinates. Our hero attempts to practice a piece of music on the piano\, but distractions get in the way. When he finally sits down to play\, pandemonium breaks loose. \n\nMy Financial Career\nGerald Potterton\, 1962\, 6 min 30 s \nAn animated film based on Stephen Leacock’s witty account of a young man’s first brush with banking. When he tries to make his deposit\, he is so intimidated by the institution that nothing he says comes out right. \n\n \nThe Railrodder\nGerald Potterton\, 1965\, 24 min 47 s \nThis short film from director Gerald Potterton (Heavy Metal) stars Buster Keaton in one of the last films of his long career. As “the railrodder”\, Keaton crosses Canada from east to west on a railway track speeder. True to Keaton’s genre\, the film is full of sight gags as our protagonist putt-putts his way to British Columbia. Not a word is spoken throughout\, and Keaton is as spry and ingenious at fetching laughs as he was in the old days of the silent slapsticks. \n

SUMMARY:Dancing Arabs - 8PM
DESCRIPTION:Dancing Arabs \nScreening: Thursday\, September 17\, 2015 – 8pm\nTickets: Adults $10\, Senior/Senior $8\nLocation: Uptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop Street West\, Barrie\nDirected by: Eran Ricklis\nCast: Yaël Abecassis\, Michael Moshonov\, Ali Suliman\, Tawfeek Barhom and Danielle Kitzis\nDrama\, PG\, 105 minutes · Arabic\, Hebrew\, German with English Subtitles (France/Germany/Israel) \n“A tender\, occasionally whimsical tale of love and friendship\, set amid the over-boiling cauldron that is the Middle East conflict” – Bill Brownstein\, Montreal Gazette \nA young Palestinian outsider struggles to find his place in Israeli society in this coming-of-age drama by acclaimed veteran filmmaker Eran Riklis (The Syrian Bride).  A whip-smart but introverted teenager from an Arab village\, Eyad Barhum (Tawfeek Barhum)\, earns a place in Jerusalem’s most prestigious boarding school – the first and only Arab to be accepted. Initially isolated and lonely in his new surroundings\, he slowly overcomes social\, cultural and language barriers with the help of his peers. The compassion of a Jewish girl\, Naomi (Danielle Kitzis)\, blossoms into a forbidden romance across religious divide. Meantime\, Eyad also finds kinship with Yonatan (Michael Moshonov)\, a classmate with muscular dystrophy\, their relationship lending strength to the wheelchair-bound boy’s mother Edna (Yael Abecassis)\, a single parent. As heartbreak\, personal tragedy and sociopolitical strife intrude on his adolescent idyll; Eyad soon realizes that he must make a life-changing compromise of identity in order to be accepted. Arab-Israeli journalist Sayed Kashua’s semiautobiographical screenplay is a plea for understanding between both sides of an intractable political divide. SUMMARY:Dancing Arabs - 4PM
DESCRIPTION:Dancing Arabs \nScreening: Thursday\, September 17\, 2015 – 4pm\nTickets: Adults $10\, Senior/Senior $8\nLocation: Uptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop Street West\, Barrie\nDirected by: Eran Ricklis\nCast: Yaël Abecassis\, Michael Moshonov\, Ali Suliman\, Tawfeek Barhom and Danielle Kitzis\nDrama\, PG\, 105 minutes · Arabic\, Hebrew\, German with English Subtitles (France/Germany/Israel) \n  \n“A tender\, occasionally whimsical tale of love and friendship\, set amid the over-boiling cauldron that is the Middle East conflict” – Bill Brownstein\, Montreal Gazette \n  \nA young Palestinian outsider struggles to find his place in Israeli society in this coming-of-age drama by acclaimed veteran filmmaker Eran Riklis (The Syrian Bride).
