SUMMARY:BEANS - Galaxy Cinemas
DESCRIPTION:In-person only: Thursday\, September 30\, 2021\nGalaxy Cinemas Barrie\, 72 Commerce Park Dr\, Barrie\, ON L4N 8W8\nDirected by Tracey Deer\nDrama\, Rated 14A – coarse language; violence\, 92 minutes\, Canada\, 2020\nStarring: Kiawentiio\, Rainbow Dickerson\, Violah Beauvais\, Paulina Alexis\, D’Pharaoh McKay Woon-A-Tai \n  \nReserved seating. Tickets $10.00 \n***THIS SCREENING HAS SOLD OUT***\n[maxbutton id=”8″ ] \n  \nBEANS is the coming-of-age story of a Mohawk girl named Tekehentahkhwa\, who more often goes by her quirky nickname\, Beans (Kiawentiio). She’s a loving big sister to her constant sidekick\, Ruby (Violah Beauvais)\, as they play in the woods and carefully avoid the rough and tough kids of their neighbourhood on the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawà:ke\, Quebec. \nHer father\, Kania’tariio (Joel Montgrand)\, rides her hard because he worries her sensitivity is a dangerous weakness. But her mother\, Lily (Rainbow Dickerson)\, has great aspirations for her and is an even bigger force to be reckoned with. They don’t agree on whether she should leave the reserve for high school\, and Beans isn’t brave enough to speak up for what she wants. \nThis debate is pushed to the side when a peaceful protest at a neighbouring reserve turns into an armed stand-off to protect a burial ground from being desecrated for a golf course expansion. Beans’ community quickly joins the battle in what becomes known as the Oka Crisis. Overnight\, her community is cut off from the outside world. \nBeans seeks out the toughest girl she knows\, April (Paulina Alexis)\, to transform into the brave Mohawk warrior that she needs to be to survive. She gains acceptance with the cool clique\, but that doesn’t prepare her for the racism and violence she confronts as the conflict escalates. Unable to cope\, she descends into a dark\, rage-filled existence focused on revenge. \nIt’s not until her reckless actions put everyone she cares about into peril that she wakes up to what’s really important in her fragile world. \n  \nAwards: 12 wins and 8 nominations \nWinner – Rising Stars Award\, Toronto International Film Festival\, 2020\nWinner – Best Canadian Feature Film\, Vancouver International Film Festival\, 2020\nWinner – DGC Discovery Award\, Directors Guild of Canada\, 2020\nWinner – WGC Award\, Feature Film\, Writers Guild of Canada\, 2021\nWinner – Best Feature\, Kingston Canadian Film Festival\, 2021\nWinner\, Canadian Screen Award\, Best First Feature Film\, Canadian Screen Awards\, 2021\nWinner – Audience Award\, Best Narrative Feature\, Blackstar Film Festival\, 2021\nWinner – Crystal Bear\, Best Film\, Berlin International Film Festival\, 2021 \n  \n\nGalaxy Cinemas COVID-19 Protocols:\nAs of September 22\, 2021\, the Government of Ontario requires guests who are 12 years of age and older to be fully vaccinated (two doses\, plus 14 days) and to provide their proof of vaccination along with photo ID to access our theatres. After 10 years of living in Paris\, Selma (Golshifteh Farahani) has returned to Tunis. Her younger cousin can’t figure out why she’d leave the French capital\, her aunt is overbearing\, and her uncle is only giving her a matter of weeks to crash in the apartment above their house. Selma\, nonetheless\, is steadfast in her resolve: to open up her own psychotherapy practice. There isn’t just the matter of finding interested patients in a locale that’s not keen on the talking cure. She also needs to navigate a confusing bureaucratic circus in order to get the right papers to run her practice. On top of all that\, a strapping — albeit unbending — cop\, Naim (Majd Mastoura)\, is keeping a close eye on her every move. Farahani gives a powerful and compelling performance. Kate (Kristin Scott Thomas) is one of these women\, bearing the stress and monotony with grace and forbearance. As the longstanding chair of the Social Committee\, Kate has a hard time stepping away when newcomer Lisa (Sharon Horgan) is appointed in her place. The two women have very different definitions of social activities. When the idea of starting a choir is first broached\, they theoretically find common ground — even if they don’t see eye to eye. Discovering that they can rely on each other for more than beautiful harmonies\, the members come together to confront the challenges of having a partner at war\, to face the uncertainty of their fates\, and to acknowledge how much of their identity is wrapped up in their husbands. \n  \n\nAwards:\n \nWinner\, Truly Moving Picture Award\, Heartland Film\, 2020 \n\n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnqHobwuRjc” video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n  \n\n\n  \n\n \nIndividual Tickets: Adults $10\, Seniors/Students $8\n(prices include HST) \nAdvance tickets are available online here\, or at the door on screening night at Uptown Theatre box office. \nNotes for online ticket sales delivery:\nSelect “Will Call” if you wish to pick up your tickets at box office on day of screening; or “E-Delivery” to receive a digital file of your ticket (pdf) which can then be printed at home or scanned off your smart phone. \n[/col_one] \n  \n[fullwidth ]

Meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family\, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate\, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo\, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist\, to the Parks. Soon\, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims’ newfound comfort\, a savage\, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out\, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks. By turns darkly hilarious and heart wrenching\, Parasite showcases a modern master at the top of his game. \n  \nAwards: 205 wins & 182 nominations!\n \nWinner\, Best Director/Best Original Screenplay/Best International Feature Film and Best Picture\, Academy Awards\, USA\, 2020\nWinner\, Best Foreign Film/Nominee – Best Director\, Golden Globes\, USA\, 2020\nWinner\, Best Screenplay\, BAFTA Awards\, 2020\nWinner\, Outstanding Performance by Cast in a Motion Picture\, Screen Actors Guild Awards\, 2020\nWinner\, Palme d’Or\, Cannes Film Festival\, 2019\nWinner\, Best Film\, Asia Pacific Screen Awards\, 2019\nWinner\, Best International Film\, British Independent Film Awards\, 2019 \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isOGD_7hNIY” video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n  \nFilm tickets: $10 for Adults\, $8 for Seniors/Students \nAdvance tickets are available online or at the Uptown Theatre the day of screening. SUMMARY:Pipe Dreams - 8:30PM
DESCRIPTION:[col_one ] \n \nScreening:\nSunday\, February 23\, 2020 – 8:30 pm\nUptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop St. W.\, Barrie \n  \nDirected: Stacey Tenenbaum\, Van Royko\, Christina Clark\nWith: Yuan Shen\, Thomas Gaynor\, Alcee Chriss III\, Nick Cappozoli\, Sebastian Heindl\nDocumentary\, PG for some language\, 78 minutes (Canada) \n  \n“You’ll enjoy the bright cinematography\, the earnest nature of these talented people and the triumph at the competition itself.” – Carolyn Mauricette\, Cinema Axis \n  \nIn a house of worship\, devotion takes many forms. Aiming to master the world’s largest instrument\, five young organists compete in the prestigious Canadian International Organ Competition\, culminating in a captivating finale at Montreal’s historic Notre-Dame Basilica. This high-stakes event\, with over $100\,000 in prize money\, attracts top musicians from around the world. They each attempt to transcend their hallowed surroundings on a magnificent Casavant organ constructed from 7\,000 pipes. DESCRIPTION:[col_one ] \n \nScreening:\nSunday\, February 23\, 2020 – 4:30 pm\nUptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop St. W.\, Barrie \n  \nWritten and Directed by: Sophie Huber\nWith: Ambrose Akinmusire\, Miles Davis\, Herbie Hancock\, John Coltrane\, Wayne Shorter\, Norah Jones\, Don Was and many more.\nDocumentary\, PG\, 85 minutes (USA/Switzerland) \n  \n“Sophie Huber’s consistently fascinating documentary about Blue Note Records leaves you wishing only one thing: it should have been longer.” – Frank Scheck\, Hollywood Reporter \n  \n“Even if jazz is not your thing\, Huber’s rich musical history of its preeminent label is something to sink into.” – Laura Clifford\, Reeling Reviews \n  \n“Great interviews; great music; great Black history. One of the most important record labels in the history of jazz — and\, by extension\, that of American music — Blue Note Records has been home to such groundbreaking artists as Miles Davis\, Thelonious Monk\, John Coltrane\, Bud Powell and Art Blakey\, as well as present-day luminaries like Robert Glasper\, Ambrose Akinmusire and Norah Jones. Founded in New York in 1939 by German Jewish refugees Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff\, the history of Blue Note Records goes beyond the landmark recordings\, encompassing the pursuit of musical freedom\, the conflict between art and commerce and the idea of music as a transformative and revolutionary force. \n  \nAWARDS: 4 Wins\, 10 Nominations \nNominee\, Audience Award\, Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival\, 2018\nNominee\, Audience Award – Best Documentary\, Cork International Film Festival\, 2018\nNominee\, John Schlesinger Award\, Palm Springs International Film Festival\, 2019\nWinner\, Programmers Award – Documentary\, Pan African Film Festival\, 2019\nNominee\, Audience Award – Best Documentary\, Sheffield International Documentary Festival\, 2018\nNominee\, Audience Award – Documentary\, Tribeca Film Festival\, 2018 \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”youtube” video_url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6D0uVDnCOR4″ video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n  \nTickets are available online By Clicking Here\, or at the Uptown Theatre during the festival (Feb 20-23\, 2020). SUMMARY:Into the Canyon - 8:30pm
DESCRIPTION:[col_one ] \n \nScreening:\nThursday\, February 20\, 2020 – 7:00 pm\nSaturday\, February 22\, 2020 – 8:30 pm\nUptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop St. W.\, Barrie \n  \nDirector: Peter McBride\nWith: Kevin Fedarko and Peter McBride\nDocumentary\, PG\, 84 minutes (USA) \n  \nIn 2016 filmmaker/photographer Pete McBride and writer Kevin Fedarko set out on a 750-mile journey on foot through the entire length of the Grand Canyon. From the outset\, the challenge was far more than they bargained for. More people have stood on the moon than have completed a continuous through hike of the Canyon. McBride and Fedarko took a sectional approach\, achieving a feat that many adventurers have taken decades to complete. Others have lost their lives trying. But their quest was more than just an endurance test – it was also a way to draw attention to the unprecedented threats facing one of our most revered landscapes. \n  \nAwards:\nWinner\, Best Feature-Length Mountain Film\, Banff Mountain Film Festival\, 2019 \n  \n[embed_video video_site=”vimeo” video_url=”https://vimeo.com/255637699″ video_width=”640″ video_height=”360″ ] \n  \nTickets are available online By Clicking Here\, or at the Uptown Theatre during the festival (Feb 20-23\, 2020). DESCRIPTION:[col_one ] \n \nScreening:\nSaturday\, February 22\, 2020 – 6:30 pm\nUptown Theatre\, 55 Dunlop St. W.\, Barrie \n  \nWritten and Directed by: Fredrik Gertten\nWith: Leilani Farha\, Saskia Sassen\, Joseph Stiglitz\, Roberto Saviano\nDocumentary/Comedy\, PG\, 92 minutes\, Languages: English/ Spanish/German/ Italian/Korean/French/English subtitles (Sweden/Canada/United Kingdom) \n  \n“Fredrik Gertten’s lively\, approachable documentary on the global housing crisis should leave audiences feeling engaged\, enraged and with plenty to discuss afterwards…Potentially depressing material is handled with a light touch and a welcome edge of humour.” – Allan Hunter\, Screen Daily.\n \n  \nHousing prices are skyrocketing in cities around the world. Incomes are not. PUSH sheds light on a new kind of faceless landlord\, our increasingly unliveable cities and an escalating crisis that has an effect on us all. The film follows Leilani Farha\, the UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing\, as she’s travelling the globe\, trying to understand who’s being pushed out of the city and why. “I believe there’s a huge difference between housing as a commodity and gold as a commodity.
